
Located in Gansu Province in northwestern China, the Zhangye National Geopark features some of the most striking geological landforms in Asia. Spanning over 300 square kilometers, rolling mountain ridges display vibrant, multi-colored bands of crimson red, golden yellow, emerald green, and deep violet. Known as the Rainbow Mountains or Danxia landforms, these dramatic geological strata look as though a painter washed a brush across the desert peaks.
The 24-Million-Year Geological Canvas
The formation of Zhangye Danxia began over 24 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. The region was once a vast inland basin where rivers deposited layer upon layer of red sandstone, siltstone, and mineral-rich mudstones. Over millions of years, varying mineral compositions created distinct colored strata:
- Red and Magenta Bands: Formed by iron oxide (hematite) coat on sandstone grains.
- Yellow and Golden Mineral Bands: Produced by limonite and iron sulfide deposits.
- Green and Blue Layers: Resulting from chlorite and copper-rich clay minerals.
Tectonic Uplift and Weathering
When the Indian tectonic plate collided with the Eurasian plate—creating the Himalayas—the immense compressive forces buckled the flat sedimentary basin into rolling folds and steep mountain ridges. Subsequent rain and wind erosion stripped away the top layers, exposing the vibrant, tilted cross-sections of ancient mineral strata visible today.
